1. Fixed Access Technologies

Fixed Access technologies include passive optical network, point-to-point optical, wired broadband, wired narrowband, wireless narrowband and free space optical transmission (visible light communication) and copper-based digital subscriber line technologies, including ADSL, VDSL, HDSL, SHDSL, G.fast and MGfast. These access technologies are being used in their traditional uses as well as in backhaul and fronthaul networks for emerging services such as broadband wireless, 5G Mobile and data centre interconnect.

The “Fixed Access (FA)” Division is responsible for formulating a standard in the form of Generic Requirements (GRs), Interface Requirements (IRs) and Guidelines by harmonizing with the international standards ( i.e. ITU, ATIS, ETSI, IEEE, IEC, ASTM, IETF, ISO, MEF, 3GPP etc.) in the area of Fixed Access Technology for development of new products thereby bringing about self-reliance in the manufacturing and Technology development sectors of Indian Telecom Industry. customer premises equipment, Passive Optical Networks equipment, Power plant and batteries by interacting with the stake holders.

i. Passive Optical Network (PON):-

A Passive Optical Network (PON) consists of Optical Line Termination (OLT) system installed generally at the Central Office (CO) and a set of associated Optical Network Units (ONU)/Optical Network Terminations (ONT) installed at various locations in the network (as detailed later) with a passive Optical Distribution Network (ODN) comprised of optical fibre cables and passive splitters/couplers interconnecting them.

  • This document describes the generic requirements and specifications for broadband access network architectures based on Fibre-to-the-Home/Office/Cell/Building/Curb/Cab (FTTH/FTTO/FTTCell/FTTB/ FTTC/FTTCab) commonly called FTTx architectures, using Higher Speed PON optical network, as per, ITU-T G.9804.x recommendations for use in Indian telecom network. The Standard outlines the general characteristics of HSP systems including network services, User Network Interfaces (UNI) and Service Network Interfaces (SNI).

ii. Radio over Fiber (RoF) system

A radio-over-fibre (RoF) system is capable to transmit waveform information over an optical fibre network for radio communication services. The RoF systems have the potential to support various services for mobile users, residential subscribers, business customers, mobile and fixed backhauling, and other applications. The RoF systems also have the potential to support various fixed network services to provide compatibility with existing PON systems such as GPON, 10-Gigabit-capable passive optical network (XG-PON) and NG-PON2. The RoF Optical Network Units (ONUs) must be remotely manageable and support configuration functions. The RoF system must provide full fault, configuration, accounting, performance, and security (FCAPS) management capability for the RoF ONUs

  • This document describes the generic requirements and specifications for the system overview, physical layer requirements, system requirements and co-existence with passive optical network (PON) for analogue RoF systems supporting the international mobile telecommunication (IMT) system over optical distribution network (ODN). This document also describes a fundamental architecture and requirements for RoF systems as per ITU-T G.9803 Recommendations for use in Indian telecom network. However, specific implementation shall be subject to networking requirements of the Service Providers.

Background

  • A Converged Network Platform (C-MSAAE), in general, consists of Layer 2 Switching, Layer 3 Routing, MPLS functionality, GPON/XGSPON/XG-PON technology along with optionally sub interfaces such as E1, STM-N, xDSL etc as per their respective standards references. C-MSAAE Network will be comprising of equipment at the Central Office (CO) and a set of associated Customer Premise equipment (CPE) installed at various locations in the network with minimal component of Active equipment deployments between CO & CPE.

  • This document outlines the general characteristics of C-MSAAE systems including network services, User Network Interfaces (UNI) and Service Network Interfaces (SNI). Also, it outlines the basic deployment configurations. However, specific implementation shall be subjected to networking requirements of the Service Providers.

iv. Digital Subscriber Line (DSL)

Digital subscriber line is a family of technologies that are used to transmit digital data at varying speed over copper local telecommunication network from relatively short distances at high bit rates, and to long distances at relatively lower bit rates. Types of DSL technologies are SHDSL, ADSLx (i.e. ADSL/ADSL2/ ADSL2+), VDSLx (i.e. VDSL2/VDSL2+), G.fast, mg.fast, G.hn based DSL Equipment, etc. The DSL equipment has mainly two variants i.e. DSL modem and DSLAM wherein DSL modem is usually installed at customer’s premises, the DSLAM is installed at Central Office. The DSL equipment can have integrated splitters called splitterless DSL equipment wherein POTS service (2W interface) is also available.
